Client satisfaction, top Trip Advisor scores and strong online marketing keys to success for Clique Hotels and Resorts.
CANMORE and CALGARY, A.B. Only months away from opening Canmore’s first four-star luxury hotel, Clique Hotels and Resorts is a homegrown Alberta success story. Celebrating growth of more than 300 percent over 10 years* Clique has become one of Alberta’s best hospitality and accommodation businesses. It has flourished in over 20 years in operation while maintaining top TripAdvisor scores across its portfolio of properties.
Founded in 1997 by Canmore local businessman Jim Muir, Clique Hotels and Resorts (then known as Summit Resort Management Inc., changed to Clique in 2010) was created to support the Western Canada tourism industry by operating high-performance hotels and resorts and delivering unparalleled customer service and luxurious accommodation.
“As a local Canmore resident, it was important to me that the tourism industry in Canmore and Alberta was highly revered. Our beautiful Rocky Mountain landscape, culture, and history is something that deserves to be celebrated in style and comfort. I saw the opportunity for Clique Hotels and Resorts to step-up and contribute to the local community” says Jim Muir, president of Clique Hotels and Resorts.
With more than 500 staff in seven hotels and resorts, five in Canmore and two in Calgary, Clique Hotels and Resorts consistently place in Trip Advisor’s Top Ten lists. It operates five hotels in Canmore, Copperstone Resort, Stoneridge Mountain Resort, Blackstone Mountain Lodge, Falcon Crest Lodge, the Malcolm Hotel at Spring Creek and two in Calgary, Hotel Clique and the Applause Hotel.
Considered the best hotels and resorts in Canmore, Clique Hotels has the top 1, 2, 3 and 4 hotels in Canmore, according to TripAdvisor. Its Falcon Crest Lodge is the only Alberta hotel to be named Top Hotel in Canada four years in a row by the TripAdvisor Travelers’ Choice™ awards.
Muir created the Clique Hotels and Resorts brand to reflect the small and exclusive group of properties in its portfolio. The hospitality management group continues to increase its portfolio by helping resort properties improve their product quality and services. It is the leader in market share for Canmore and consistently sets the bar for occupancy levels.
In 2009 and 2013, Clique Hotels and Resorts took over the management of both the Copperstone Resort and Blackstone Mountain Lodge. This led to increases in owner profits by up to 400 percent and brought both resorts up to the TripAdvisor status of Top Four in Canmore, a feat not easily achieved.

“Members of the tourism and hospitality sector, while being competitive, often work together for the greater good of the destination and while we would never single out any competitor, we are proud of our success when compared to some of the big brand names in our markets,” says Muir, “Our relentless focus on customer experience and client satisfaction is working.”
According to the Canmore Business and Tourism’s 2015-2020 Strategic Plan, the 2020 target for the tourism sector is an annual visitor spend of $400 million (up from $278 million in 2012). Tourism in Alberta accounts for 54% of all visitors to Canada, taking in $8 billion annually while supporting over 19,000 businesses and employing more than 127,000 people.
The tourism communities of Canmore, Banff, and Jasper are key destinations helping Alberta deliver on its tourism vision of increasing economic revenue to $10.3 billion by 2020. Collectively, Canmore, Banff, and Jasper host 17% of overnight visitors in Alberta.
Achieving and maintaining a top TripAdvisor rank is not easy. The rank is based on quality, quantity and how current are direct customer reviews. It is crucial that all services and elements of each hotel and resort run by Clique are operating at the highest standards at all times.
The next development to be added to the Clique portfolio is the new Malcolm Hotel at Spring Creek, which plans to officially open in November 2018 but is currently taking bookings for events and small group accommodation. The Malcolm Hotel will be the first traditional hotel to open in Canmore in the last 20 years.
