More than 3000 people attended as new multi-cultural mall provides a new venue for festivals and events

Calgary A.B. New Horizon Mall welcomed a crowd of more than 3000 engaged community members celebrating the Mid-Autumn Festival this past Sunday.

New Horizon Mall was the host venue and offered up its Main Stage for the Festival Program which saw live performances such as the Lion Dance, Dragon Dance, Drum Show, Chinese Zitcher, and a martial arts demonstration. More than 200 performers participated in the program with New Horizon Mall’s Main Stage providing video capture, live streaming on a big screen and a sound system projecting the show throughout the entire mall.

800 free Mooncakes were shared with the crowd as more than 30 vendors set up around the main stage selling Chinese food, delicacies, and Mid-Autumn Festival gift items. The Mid-Autumn Festival is the second largest event celebrated by Chinese and Vietnamese communities, with the first being the Chinese New Year.  As an annual harvest festival, it showcases popular Asian foods, cultural entertainment, performing arts and is a symbol of reunion, harmony and happiness in the Asian culture.

“We wanted a space that embraced the Chinese cultural community and could handle a show with 200 performers. Holding this event here was a huge success,” says Danny Chan, publisher of Trend Weekly and event organizer, “The modern architecture and high tech Main Stage provided exactly what we needed. We are already planning to come back for Chinese New Year.”

New Horizon Mall is the first shopping mall in Alberta where stores are bought and owned, instead of rented out from the Mall. Unlike other malls which are occupied primarily by large corporations and chains, New Horizon Mall will encompass a collection of small businesses, family enterprises and local entrepreneurs bringing unique products and services to the Calgary region.

When construction on the Mall was completed in May, the process of closing on purchase agreements started, as did fitting out stores and finding store operators. With 99.6% of original purchasers closing, the process of opening stores is in full swing as nine stores were open at the time of the festival with another three opening this week and 6 more are set to open in the next month.

The Mall will be a culturally diverse shopping destination and is open now providing a brand new, modern venue with high tech Main Stage specifically designed to match its unique shopping experience with culturally distinct forms of entertainment, cultural events, holiday celebrations and fashion shows organized year-round.

Being the host venue for a wide-range of multicultural events is exactly what New Horizon Mall wants as it adds to the diverse shopping experience and allows potential shoppers to embrace their cultural roots and experience familiar cultural events or holiday celebrations. There is no charge for venue rental and New Horizon Mall is actively seeking groups to partner with on events.

The business model for New Horizon Mall is based on the highly successful Pacific Mall built by the Torgan Group in Markham, Ontario which took two years for all its owners to open their stores.

New Horizon Mall is supporting investors and store owners with its business referral program which connects investors with businesses interested in pursuing leasing opportunities from New Horizon Mall’s independent unit owners.

Interested parties should stop by the leasing office at the mall or contact New Horizon Mall at: NHM Leasing Centre, 1-855-851-2888,, (
