Revitalized park will be North Shore centerpiece as trend toward multi-family homes continues
NORTH VANCOUVER, BC. North Vancouver City Council voted unanimously to accept the recommendations of the Moodyville Park Master Plan Task Force to initiate a $3 million revitalization of the existing Moodyville Park. The vote took place on July 17, 2017 and is the first time the City has worked with an appointed Task Force to prepare a park master plan.
The City set up the Task Force as the current park was not meeting the needs of the growing community. It is made up of planning and design experts and community members. With almost 5 acres of green space just off the North Shore’s newest community, Green on Queensbury, the newly designed park will have green gathering spaces, play areas, preserved park pathways, bike paths and linkage between the Spirit Trail. For details on the Moodyville Park Master Plan implementation timelines, visit the City website.
Two newer, much more inviting park entrances will greet park visitors at the foot of Queensbury Ave and East 3rd Street with a public plaza, as well as Moody Avenue and West 2nd Street. Improvements and upgrades will be made to children’s play areas, washroom facilities, picnic areas and a new covered pavilion, multi-sport court and dog park.
“The revitalization of Moodyville Park and the Master Plan is a great example of the good things that can happen when stakeholders get together for the benefit of the community,” says Parham Mahboubi, vice president, planning and marketing, Qualex Landmark™, builders of Green on Queensbury, a new condominium and townhome project next to the park. “The combination of the land swap with the City and Green on Queensbury and the City’s appointment of an independent park task force has created an incredible opportunity to create a massive, lasting community benefit.”
The City now needs to complete a detailed design for the park and start a three-phase process before revitalization of the park can begin. Funding for the development of the Moodyville Park Master Plan was provided by Qualex-Landmark™. The funding for the revitalization will come from the Civic Amenity Reserve.
“The City is very pleased with the work of the Moodyville Park Master Plan Task Force and its innovative recommendations for the revitalization this historic park in our City through a land exchange with Green on Queensbury. We look forward to the improvements that will serve the growing Moodyville neighbourhood for generations to come,” says Mayor Darrell Mussatto.
For the Green on Queensbury project, Qualex Landmark™ has paid a community benefit contribution of more than $4 million to the City who determines how the money will be spent.
With the completion of the land swap between Qualex Landmark™ and the City of North Vancouver, Phase 1 will encompass the bulk of the park improvements. For example, these include extending the existing greenway/bike path through the park, improving the park’s internal path network, new children’s play areas and building a pump track for cyclists.
Construction will occur simultaneously with Qualex-Landmark’s™ new Green on Queensbury development. Green on Queensbury is the first large scale and fully parkside residential community to lay down its roots in this soon-to-be revitalized Moodyville neighbourhood.
