Canmore, AB – This Christmas, give the Senior in your life the least expensive, most valuable gift you can: your time. According to Statistics Canada, more than half of all senior citizens living alone reported some degree of loneliness.

Of that group, 60 per cent saw an increased risk of dementia and cognitive decline. Only 25 per cent of seniors living in shared accommodations experienced feelings of isolation and a decreased risk of dementia.

Avoiding social isolation, especially during the holiday season is important for maintaining the mental and physical health of seniors and their caregivers. Involvement in meaningful activities and maintaining close relationships lead to successful and healthy aging.

Origin at Spring Creek is an award-winning adult active lifestyle and memory care community located in the heart of the Canadian Rockies. Active living lessens the risk of loneliness by promoting socialization through planned activities. Highly trained professionals at Origin created a unique concept called The Origin Way, which is dedicated to nurturing social connections and facilitating new relationships through daily planned activities.

“Origin is committed to enriching the lives of all our residents,” said Cindy Fraser, general manager of Origin at Spring Creek, “Christmas can be a lonely time for many people, however we have planned plenty of daily activities that will help residents get into the holiday spirit.”

Combating senior loneliness over the holidays is a key component for Origin staff, who encourage family members and local Canmore residents to get involved. This holiday season, Origin is giving back to the Canmore community through the Spirit of Giving campaign, which sees residents donating food and gift items to the Bow Valley Christmas Spirit Campaign. Canmore residents are invited to attend the Origin Christmas party and participate in the Christmas carol singalong.

“It’s important for our residents to remain active within the Canmore community, especially around Christmas time,” explained Ms. Fraser, “selflessly giving to others provides further purpose and meaning to the holidays, which benefits their overall well-being and happiness.”

A communal eating terrace and private dining room allow resident family members to visit Origin for a Christmas feast, without the stress of cooking and cleaning. The Origin Way includes gourmet dining with fresh ingredients grown in the community gardens, or sourced from local markets and prepared by Origin’s certified chef.

Origin at Spring Creek’s success of providing personalized care and support services has made them a leader in active living and memory care. Providing the option to live independently while getting support from healthcare professionals allows seniors to “age-in-place” by increasing the level of care as needed.

Origin at Spring Creek has a memory care wing (Morningstar House) specifically designed for those with living with memory challenges including dementia and Alzheimer’s. In addition to providing assistance with activities of daily living, the memory care staff are specially trained and provide 24-hour supervision.

Memory care assisted living has the advantage of specializing in a singular kind of care. Origin’s Morningstar House is designed to create a lifestyle of comfort, security and purpose for its residents. Programming and activities cater to the needs of residents’ memory loss by encouraging existing strengths and abilities, perceptive function and stimulating meaning.

Origin at Spring Creek is committed to helping residents combat the feeling of loneliness and isolation at all times, but especially around the holidays.
