Pop up fresh market launches at New Horizon Mall as Prairie Horizon prepares for Spring opening
Balzac, AB. – Prairie Horizon Fresh Market, set to open at New Horizon Mall in early 2020, announced today that Just Ripe Inc. will provide fresh produce year-round for this new market.
Just Ripe works with the Doef Family Greenhouse operation who have been providing local produce for Albertans for 50 years. It is uniquely Albertan in that much of its local fresh produce is greenhouse grown by producing natural gas from subsurface reservoirs immediately below and surrounding the Doef’s greenhouses and enabling the provision of fresh produce of the highest quality year-round.
“Just Ripe has been an innovator in working with the Doef family to enhance their already well-established family greenhouse business,” says Ken Aylesworth, Prairie Horizon Fresh Market. “The Doef Family started growing greenhouse tomatoes in Alberta a half century ago and expanded to be one of first producers of Long English cucumbers. They know produce and we are glad to have Doef greenhouse produce on our shelves.”

On November 2nd a Pop-Up market is being launched to feature a sampling of vendors for Prairie Horizon Fresh Market as it prepares for the opening of its permanent fresh market. The Pop-Up Market is located in the north-east corner of New Horizon Mall and will feature local produce from the greenhouse, locally grown produce, and other quality products.
Fans of the Shuswaps will love news that the renowned Dutchman Diary from Sicamous BC will offer its products at both the Pop-Up Market and Prairie Horizon Fresh Market. Another vendor highlight is Cheesecake Addiction offering locally made cheesecakes at both venues. There will be more than 10 vendors and the pop up markets will be open each Saturday and Sunday, 10 am to 4 pm.
Prairie Horizon Fresh Market is opening in Spring of 2020 under the helm of Ken and Tracy Aylesworth, who have more than 15 years of farmers market experience, including managing the successful Avenida Food Hall & Fresh Market in Calgary’s south and owning the Symons Valley Ranch Farmers Market.
“Fresh markets need fresh produce and we are excited about the vision Ken and Tracy have for this new fresh market” says Brad Murray of Just Ripe. “Ken has extensive experience in establishing and operating Markets and I expect he’ll have another hit. We are really happy to be part of New Horizon Mall. It’s not your typical mall and we really relate to the entrepreneurial culture of the mall.”
Prairie Horizon Fresh Market will occupy more than 23,000 square-feet of space at New Horizon Mall and will focus on various fresh market style vendors. Vendors will range from fresh locally sourced vegetables and fruits, ethnic specialties such as Latin and Far East cuisine, bakeries, sweets, fresh proteins, coffee, sweet and savory pies, and more.
Prairie Horizon Fresh Market is the second major anchor tenant going into New Horizon Mall, following the opening of Best Shop, a department store, that had people lining up on opening day in the summer. New Horizon Mall is unique among local malls in that the mall is an eclectic collection of small businesses, family enterprises and local entrepreneurs bringing products and services to the Calgary region.
From Alberta honey to Australian terrariums; Turkish undergarments to Indian jewelry; Asian department store (Best Shop) and Korean skin care products, New Horizon Mall offers a multicultural shopping experience like no other. It’s international food court has seating for 300, and a main stage with video and professional sound hosts a variety of multicultural entertainment year-round. New Horizon Mall stores are owned and operated or leased by creative and entrepreneurial small businesses.
The mall celebrates entrepreneurship, diversity and cultures. It has more than 25 events planned as it ramps up to the biggest shopping season of the year. The mall’s high-tech Main Stage has established itself as a popular new venue for festivals and shopper traffic is increasing.
“Our strategy of community events and anchor tenants is driving in shoppers,” says Scott Smith, general manager, New Horizon Mall. “We’ve come a long way in a year and have more stores open now then some of the smaller malls, but we don’t have the same stores that every other mall has and that is unique.”
Fresh Market Facts:
In 2017, the value of the organic food market in Canada amounted to 5.4 billion Canadian dollars.
According to a 2015 Alberta Agriculture and Forestry report on local food demand in the Calgary region, in the past 12 months the most popular local food supply channels were supermarkets (88 per cent of all respondents), farmers’ markets (67 per cent) and restaurants or other eating establishments (66%).
The results speak to the ease of identifying local origin through various market channels and indicated that farmers’ markets have the strongest growth opportunity in the near future. Source:
