Poll shows Canadians divided on Halloween as NHM launches free safe family event this Saturday
October 13, 2020 – Calgary A.B. New Horizon Mall and Haunted Calgary have combined efforts to make sure this Halloween is safe, but scary. New Horizon Mall is hosting a free and safe family event, Spooktacular Halloween Celebration on Oct. 17th starting at noon.
Albertans have been screaming in shock and horror as the Devil’s Drive-in, Canada’s first ever drive-In haunt opened Friday October 9th to sold out audiences. While there is now a waiting list for the Devil’s Drive-in, costumed cast members of the show will be circulating throughout the marketplace during the Spooktacular Celebration.
“The concern is real. Parents are not sure what to do this year and we are happy to provide a safe, social distancing option this Halloween,” says Alexandra Winn, marketing manager, New Horizon Mall.
These events come just a new Poll from Leger and the Association for Canadian Studies shows that Canadians are divided on Halloween this year with 52 per cent saying they won’t let their children go trick or treating this year and 48 per cent saying they will. (Source – page 18).
This family event is free and socially-distanced activities include the Scavenger Hunt, Psycho Photo Booths, and a Balloon Pumpkin Patch, while costumed members of Haunted Calgary’s cast stalk the hallways. Costumes are encouraged and masks are required. Scavenger Hunt cards are available in the Atrium and participants who find the spooky elements hidden throughout the marketplace can enter to win a Halloween Gift Basket.

Faced with the most challenging Halloween in 100 years, Haunted Calgary innovated and created the Devil’s Drive-in, a unique and terrifying experience that offers a safe, social distancing, scare in your car.
“We are overwhelmed with emotion and want to thank Albertans for supporting us, especially this year. It felt like the Halloween Grinch might ruin things this year but Albertans have really stepped up and embraced our drive-in concept,” says Christine Campbell, Haunted Calgary.
Haunted Calgary is a social enterprise. Its seasoned volunteers donate their time and a percentage of profits are donated to the charitable partner of the volunteer’s choice. One of the charities this year is the Calgary Wildlife Rehabilitation Society, which is dedicated to treating injured and orphaned wildlife and providing valuable outreach and education services to the community.
Haunted Calgary has been in operation for over 25 years, starting as a community home haunt and then it made a big expansion in 2019 when it moved to New Horizon Mall.
