Intergenerational aging-in-place model proves popular with today’s seniors and their families

Vancouver B.C. Element Lifestyle Retirement has announced that on May 20, 2017 it will be launching its rental program for OPAL by elementTM at an event from 12 p.m. to 6 p.m. The event will be held at OPAL’s discovery centre located City Square Mall (Upper Shops), directly below Kirin Restaurant #130 – 555 West 12th, Vancouver BC.

OPAL by elementTM is the first residence to offer support and care services to older adults where family members and friends of any age are encouraged to live together. Only one member of the family needs to be 55 or over allowing for families to stay together and spend as much quality time together as they wish.

The rental program launch follows the sales success of what has proved to be a sought after model for retirement living. The intergenerational aging-in-place condo building in the Cambie Corridor is 60 per cent sold with all two-bedroom and three-bedroom suites purchased. OPAL by element sold $32 million in Condos in six months as 26 homes have been purchased.

According to 2016 census numbers released by Statistics Canada, for the first time in Canadian history the senior’s population has outpaced young people by close to 100,000 people with the over 65 population sitting at 5.9 million, while the under 14 population sits at 5.8 million. Statistics Canada estimates that by the year 2024 more than one in five Canadians will be seniors.

Element is changing the perception and experience of retirement and aging with its revolutionary concept that won an international award over 950 projects assessed worldwide. The revolutionary concept has resonated with many of today’s seniors and their families, ultimately leading to the project’s sales success and overwhelming interest in the rental units even in advance of launch.

As a number of families registered in 2016, they have been contacted for an opportunity to reserve their preferred unit in advance of the public launch. A week before launch, 12.5 per cent of units have already been reserved. Anyone wishing to make an appointment ahead of the May 20 date may do so by contacting OPAL by element at info@elementliving.com or by calling 604-871-9265.

“We are so happy to see OPAL’s unique concept being so well received,” says Candy Ho, vice president, marketing & corporate relations, Element Lifestyle Retirement. “Our top priority has been to provide a place where one can age with grace in the company of those they love most.”

Rental suites are designed specifically for aging-in-place and are registered for assisted living so residents can stay as long as possible without ever having to move out of the community. There are 31 Licenced Care beds, to which OPAL residents have priority access should they require 24-hour Registered Nursing care.

Special consideration has been applied to features such as tub and shower access, automated sensors and advanced security with an integrated fob system that combines suite and amenity sensor access, as well as emergency response.

At the launch event there will be a culinary demonstration from visionary master chef, Wolfgang Schmelcher. He has years of experience as Executive Chef and Director of Food and Beverage of world class hotels such as Kempinsky Resort Hotels throughout Asia, the Intercontinental Hotel Group, and Swissotel Istanbul. Schmelcher will be speaking about his “Farm to Table” philosophy, which he will be bring with him to OPAL as Head Chef of the dining lounge at OPAL.
